Praying the Psalms - Thoughts on Power

Psalm 2

[2.1-6] Why the big noise, nations? Why the mean plots, peoples? Earth-leaders push for position, Demagogues and delegates meet for summit talks, The God-deniers, the Messiah-defiers: “Let’s get free of God! Cast loose from Messiah!”

Father God--Your people have been engaged and outraged by the political situations that face them for centuries. There have been demagogues and God deniers all along the way. The plot is thickening in my country right now.

I grieve for where we are...this is a time of being between the cracks in the sidewalk. We are not what we have been and not yet what we are going to be. There are those that would have us trusting in ourselves and not in you. Intervene in the political landscape, Father. This is a prayer that is as old as your people.

Heaven-throned God breaks out laughing. At first he’s amused at their presumption; Then he gets good and angry. Furiously, he shuts them up: “Don’t you know there’s a King in Zion? A coronation banquet Is spread for him on the holy summit.”

Father God--There is a sense of the ironic and the pathetic whenever humans forget who really is in charge. Speak and all of the talking heads will find there is something really important to talk about in the daily news cycle. What would you say to us? “America is a republic not and empire?” “Live simply so other can simply live?”

Somalia comes to mind as I write this the scenes of need, famine, and heart ache haunts me. There is no qualitative difference between those hungry faces and my well feed face. Lines from Your son's words to Peter float in my head...:”Feed my lambs.”

[2.7-9] Let me tell you what GOD said next. He said, “You’re my son, And today is your birthday. What do you want? Name it: Nations as a present? continents as a prize? You can command them all to dance for you, Or throw them out with tomorrow’s trash.”

Father God--You are in control. Nations dance when you demand it. Messiah one day will move in power against those who would defy his rule. The kingdom of God is alive and well in the twenty-first century.

[2.10-12] So, rebel-kings, use your heads; Upstart-judges, learn your lesson: Worship GOD in adoring embrace, Celebrate in trembling awe. Kiss Messiah! Your very lives are in danger, you know; His anger is about to explode, if you make a run for God—you won’t regret it!

Father God--Your righteous anger is kindled when you see your children in need and at the mercy of ruthless political sharks. Even political sharks who have forgotten how to lead will find that there is reason for repentance. Your mercy reaches even the powerful.

In this day that will dawn in a few moments, Father, lead those who are find themselves in power in this nation. Work in their hearts to see leadership as a trust and nothing less. Remind them that they are ultimately responsible to you. Give wisdom to our leaders, help them to know when to hold their ground and when to compromise.

  1. Good words.. I don't like what is going on politically right now, I see bad things coming. It is scary. I pray everyday about these things.
